How I’m Saving $100 a Month with Boxee and a Cheap Antenna

Cutting the Cord

coax_cable

We’re renovating our house and have moved into a rental for the next six months or so. I decided to do a little experiment and ditch my long-time cable TV provider, DirecTV.  We were spending over $100 a month for one of DirecTV’s zillion-channel packages (of which we watched maybe 10 on a regular basis).  After doing much research online, I decided on the following setup in our living room.

I Want My Free TV

freetv

Here in Dallas we can catch over 30 channels over-the-air using a cheap antenna…and 13 of these are in HD!  So right now my $2000 HDTV has an antenna proudly perched on its top.  Getting NBC, Fox, ABC and CBS over-the-air takes care of probably 90% of the shows we watch.  Your mileage may vary regarding OTA reception.  In many cases an external-mounted antenna may be required to get decent reception.

Boxee to the Rescue

To help bridge the satellite TV gap, I’m running free software called Boxee on my desktop PC.  Boxee is an amazing program that allows users to access multiple Internet video and music sites, and to bring them to a large monitor or television.  I’ve placed my PC just around the corner from our living room and am running a 15ft DVI to HDMI cable from the PC to our TV.  Boxee also gives us a great interface to access all the photos, video and music on our PC hard drive, along with a wide range of television shows, movies and songs from sites like HuluNetflixYouTubeCNN.com and CBS.com.

This evening, Boxee announced it is releasing a set-top box in 2010.  This product will bring Boxee to the masses and is likely going to sell like hotcakes.

DVR or Die

So far the biggest drawback of our new setup has been the lack of a DVR/Tivo.  Not having the ability to fast-forward through commercials has been pretty frustrating.  And having to actually watch programs when they air has been a bit of a challenge as well. My wife and I were joking we didn’t even know what day of the week most of the shows we watch air.  There is yet another free solution to this problem though.  It’s called MythTV.  This software requires a bit more setup (including the installation of some relatively inexpensive PC accessories); but being the computer geek that I am, I’ll probably have that up and running in the next few weeks.

Can I Live Without ESPN??

Another major drawback is the lack of the 5+ ESPN channels we were getting from DTV.  I’m a college sports fanatic, so this is a pretty huge void for me.  ESPN360 does provide a decent amount of live programming, but it’s no replacement for ESPN and ESPN2. I guess I’ll be heading to friends’ houses for any major ESPN broadcasts.

Has anyone else ditched their cable/satellite provider?  Let us know in the comments.  I’ll keep you updated on how this setup works out for us.

Barnes and Noble Nook In-stores November 30th

nook

E-readers are one of the hottest items this holiday season, and the Nook from Barnes and Noble seems to be the e-reader getting all the press.  Those of you attempting to pre-order a Nook today from BarnesandNoble.com will receive a message stating a December 18th ship date.  However, if you’re willing to try your luck, Barnes & Noble brick and mortar stores will supposedly have the Nook in-stock on November 30th.  We’re not certain this means all retail stores or only those in big cities.

Are you asking Santa for an e-reader this year?  Let us know in the comments.

More information on the Nook can be found on the Barnes & Noble website.

Starwood American Express Card

spgamex

I love my Starwood Amex card.  As a frequent business traveler, I am always looking to maximize my reward points earnings.  Just about every hotel and airline has some sort of rewards program, but the two I am most familiar with are American Airlines’ AAdvantage program and Starwood Hotel’s Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) program. I have been a loyal member of both for the past 6 years.  When I first began traveling a lot for my day job, I did some research and discovered the Starwood Amex card. This card comes with some great benefits.

Fee-Free for the first year (then only $45 per year after)
Earn 10,000 Starpoints with your first purchase
Earn double points using the card at SPG hotels  (As a Platinum SPG member I earn 4 points for every dollar I spend at the hotels!)
Transfer SPG points to AA miles (20k SPG points = 25k AA miles!)

The card does not have the lowest APR around, but since I would sooner give a kidney than pay my credit card company interest (by not paying the full balance each month), this isn’t a problem.

Over the past few years, I have cashed in SPG points for some incredible trips with my wife that would have otherwise been way beyond our budget. We’ve stayed at the 5-star Princeville Resort in Kauai, 3 separate 5-star hotels throughout Italy (Florence, Rome and Venice), countless nights at great W hotels across the U.S., and many others.  And we didn’t pay for a single airfare!

If you’re financially responsible enough to wield a credit card – and especially if you are a frequent traveler – check out the SPG Amex. There’s good reason the SPG Amex is the fan favorite rewards credit card on flyertalk year after year. Apply for yours now!

Shop Smart with ShopSavvy

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Our friends over at Big in Japan recently launched a sweet new app for the Google Android phone platform. The free application is currently available on the HTC G1, aka “the Google Phone.”  Here’s how it works.

Users can scan the bar code of any product using their phone’s built-in camera. ShopSavvy will then search for the best prices online and through the inventories of nearby, local stores using the phone’s built-in GPS.

Check out this demo…

We’re not the only ones impressed by ShopSavvy…Google chose the app as a winner of the first Google Android Challenge.

HTC G1 “Google Phone” Hands On

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

I had the opportunity to get some hands on time with the new HTC G1 Google phone yesterday.

Here are my takeways:

-Android OS is FAST!

-Ability to multi-thread apps (run more than one program at a time) is a huge advantage over the iPhone

-Phone is a little on the heavy side; doesn’t feel as “put together” as iPhone

-Auto-focusing camera is neat, but lacks a flash

-Thanks to Apple and their pesky patents, there’s no multitouch on the G1

-Option to use trackball is nice for certain apps

-No standard headphone jack – what are you thinking, HTC??

Bottom line: I won’t be running out to purchase this phone.  The Android OS has huge potential though…an iPhone killer perhaps.

Nikon D90

The Nikon D90 DSLR, featuring a 12.3 megapixel DX-format CMOS image sensor along with Nikon’s proprietary EXPEED image processing concept, is one of the most talked about new cameras on the market. The D90 is jam packed with features such as Live View, Scene Recognition, Active D-Lighting, Picture Control and an ISO sensitivity range of 200-3200.  This is a serious camera for serious amateur photogs. But don’t just take our word for it.  Check out these hands-on reviews:
