Starwood American Express Card

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

spgamex

I love my Starwood Amex card.  As a frequent business traveler, I am always looking to maximize my reward points earnings.  Just about every hotel and airline has some sort of rewards program, but the two I am most familiar with are American Airlines’ AAdvantage program and Starwood Hotel’s Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) program. I have been a loyal member of both for the past 6 years.  When I first began traveling a lot for my day job, I did some research and discovered the Starwood Amex card. This card comes with some great benefits.

Fee-Free for the first year (then only $45 per year after)
Earn 10,000 Starpoints with your first purchase
Earn double points using the card at SPG hotels  (As a Platinum SPG member I earn 4 points for every dollar I spend at the hotels!)
Transfer SPG points to AA miles (20k SPG points = 25k AA miles!)

The card does not have the lowest APR around, but since I would sooner give a kidney than pay my credit card company interest (by not paying the full balance each month), this isn’t a problem.

Over the past few years, I have cashed in SPG points for some incredible trips with my wife that would have otherwise been way beyond our budget. We’ve stayed at the 5-star Princeville Resort in Kauai, 3 separate 5-star hotels throughout Italy (Florence, Rome and Venice), countless nights at great W hotels across the U.S., and many others.  And we didn’t pay for a single airfare!

If you’re financially responsible enough to wield a credit card – and especially if you are a frequent traveler – check out the SPG Amex. There’s good reason the SPG Amex is the fan favorite rewards credit card on flyertalk year after year. Apply for yours now!

Southwest Tests Free Internet Access

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

The airline will begin testing its satellite broadband system on one plane. The plan is to expand testing to at least three more planes by March.

The test will run – for FREE – for 60 days. During this time Southwest will gauge demand and see how the service works before determining if and how much they’ll charge. I think they should stick to their “No Fee Zone!” motto and make it free indefinitely. Talk about a leg up on the competition!

The service will be a partnership with Yahoo, who is creating a customized home page featuring flight and destination information.
